Mute, senza singhiozzi, allor che nessuno le vede
Quando, venute l'ombre, dei visi la maschera cede

Mute, senza singhiozzi, solcando roventi le gote,
Goccian, di fiere mani nascoste, le lacrime ignote.

Piangon sui vecchi sogni, sul vecchio lontano dolore
Che il labbro dice - spento - che è piaga insanabil nel core:

Piangon sui figli ingrati, sul grigio avvizir de la vita
Che, come sabbia d'oro, ne sfugge da l'avide dita;

Su quel che tu non dici, né pure a te stessa talvolta,
Anima miseranda, nel buio, nel dubbio travolta !...

Gocce di vivo sangue, o lacrime ignote, sgorgare
Da ignoti occhi sgorgare vi sento - e, ahimè ! ...
Perché non vi posso asciugare?

Lo metteran sotterra, il cor che in segreto vi pianse:
Non saprà mai nessuno che oscura tristezza l'infranse
Ahimè !
