Comme des oiseaux funèbres, 
Je sens s'abattre sur mon cœur 
L'ennui, la tristesse et la peur, 
Ils l'enveloppent de ténèbres 
Et de leurs griffes de corbeaux
Déchirent sa chair en lambeaux. 
Plus d'espoir, l'avenir est terne ;
J'ai trop compté sur son secours
Et la douleur qui me consterne
S'est donnée à moi pour toujours. 

Dieu, si tu vois ma souffrance, 
Pourquoi ne pas me secourir ;
Si j'ai perdu toute espérance, 
Que ne me fais-tu pas mourir ? 

Un compagnon d'insomnie, 
Un mal rongeur et dévorant
Me poursuit en me torturant, 
Cette cruelle maladie, 
Cette lèpre, ce cancer noir, 
Ce spectre, c'est le désespoir. 
Au frisson que ressent mon âme
Je reconnais so doigt glacé,
Je reconnais son souffle infâme
Et son regard de trépassé.
