Sonnet

Gij meet met mij den moeden gang der uren,
Geliefde, mij zo ver . . . en zo nabij.
En wat die uren eind'loos kunnen duren,
De stilte . . . d'eenzaamheid, en Gij,
Die biddend op me wacht, verloren
in d'onmacht van uw bloedend trouwe hart.
Waarom werdt gij als Solvejg uitverkoren,
Als wie liefde minnen om haar smart.
Doorheen mijn tralie's: wat blauwe lucht
Een boot die loeit en een meeuw die vlucht . . .
O, verlangt naar verloren verten . . .
Hoe bloeit thans in mij die zoete pijn,
Dat wij gescheiden één toch zijn,
Mijn onsterflijk-geliefde . . . Berthe.
