Je contemplais un jour le dormant de ce fleuve 
Qui traîne lentement les ondes dans la mer, 
Sans que les Aquilons le fassent écumer 
Ni bondir, ravageur, sur les bords qu'il abreuve.

Et contemplant le cours de ces maux que j'épreuve,
Ce fleuve, dis-je alors, ne sait que c'est d'aimer ; 
Si quelque flamme eût pu ses glaces allumer,
Il trouverait l'amour ainsi que je le treuve.

S'il le sentait si bien, il aurait plus de flots, 
L'Amour est de la peine et non point du repos, 
Mais cette peine enfin est du repos suivie,

Si son esprit constant la défend du trépas ; 
Mais qui meurt en la peine il ne mérite pas 
Que le repos jamais lui redonne la vie.
