      Qui a perdu son chat : 
Serait-il par hasard monté jusqu'au ciel 
      A l'échelle, 
Ce pauvre vieux chat de la mère Michel 
  Que le père Lustucru chercha ? 

        Damoiselle souris 
        En roses mitaines 
    Et manteau noir fourré de gris, 
        Damoiselle souris 
          Sous cape rit 
    Du trépas de ce Croquemitaine. 

  Serait-il vraiment monté jusqu'aux cieux 
        Par l'échelle, 
  Serait-il vraiment monté jusqu'aux cieux> 
  Où peut-être n'aurait-on pas mieux 
Fait une gibelotte du chat maigre et chassieux 
        De la mère Michel ? 

Mais c'est la nuit : dame souris rôde au plafond, 
  Et le galant sous le balcon de l'infidèle ; 
Maintenant le mari dort d'un sommeil profond. 
  Le chat est mort et les belles s'en vont ; 
  La lune luit : dame souris rôde au plafond, 
  Et la mère Michel a mouché sa chandelle.
