Notes provided by Laura Prichard about the song by Alexandre Georges: This song is sung by the character of La Vougne, a fierce old Romani woman who is the grandmother of the title character Miarka. In the dialect of French still spoken around Geneva, Switzerland (which has close ties to Middle French), her name evokes two objects that touch each other, in the sense that two balls or two pucks are said to “vougner.”
The poetic text in the preface to Georges’ complete score is preceded with this introduction: “Ces tercets de vers brefs, aux assonances gutturales, sont chantés par la vielle Vougne su un ton d’incantation et de prières psalmodiantes, en trempant dans l’eau la jeune Miarka qui vient de naître.” (Roman page 43) [These brief tercets, full of guttural assonance, are sung by the Vougne in a tone of incantation and psalmodic prayer, as she dips the young Miarka, who has just been born, in water.]
