Dämmerung
Language: German (Deutsch)
Die Erde schritt dem Sonnentag entgegen,
in jedem Kelche glänzte Freudewein,
und Freude sah im Traum ich allerwegen;
kann Himmelstrost ein Werk der Hölle sein?

Noch ist mein Aug' vom Morgenlicht umflossen,
noch tönt Verheißung zitternd nach in mir,
das dunkle Grab, es ist zum Tag erschlossen;

Note provided by Johann Winkler: the autograph gives the impression of a draft rather than of a final version: the last bars are barely readable because of many strikeouts, and the last notes are written with pencil instead of ink. The text itself seems incomplete, so it's possible the composer at some point decided to discard the whole idea of the composition. The autograph can be viewed here [external link to ONB].
