by Ono no Komachi (c825 - c900)
Translation by Clara A. Walsh (flourished c1910)

The Dream
Language: English  after the Japanese (日本語)
Before I slept I thought of thee,
Then fell asleep, and sought for thee,
   And found thee:
Had I but known 'twas only seeming,
I had not waked, but lain for ever dreaming!

After a poem most likely written by Ono no Komachi, compiled in the Kokin Wakashu by Ki no Tsurayuki.

Confirmed with Clara A. Walsh The master-singers of Japan: being verse translations from the Japanese poets, New York: Dutton, 1915, page 60.
