Die Tannendickungen düstern im Mondschein schwarz und schwer, im Gaukelflug kommt darüber schwebend die Nachtschwalbe her. Auf und nieder tanzend sie ihr Weibchen umzieht, girrend ertönt ihr goldenes jauchzendes Liebeslied. Liebe, irdische Liebe, auch den Vogel der Nacht, den düsteren Vogel des Schattens hast du zum Sänger gemacht.
