Les grands bœufs, sur la route, avec leur front penché
Tirent les chariots et vont, à pas comptés,
Sans voir le soleil d'or qui pèse sur leur tête,
Sans entendre la voix de l'alerte alouette,
Qui plane dans les cieux.
Ils vont, aux grincements lugubres des essieux,
Les grands bœufs. 

Tout comme eux sur la route, avec mon front penché,
Je charrie à pas lents mes funèbres pensers ;
Ni le soleil, ni la chanson de l'alouette
Ne ramènent la joie en mon âme inquiète,
Et je vais sous les cieux
L'œil morne, aux grincements de mon cœur anxieux,
Tout comme eux.
