by André Henri Constant van Hasselt (1806 - 1874)

Tragala
Language: French (Français)
La tyrannie étreint la terre,
On aime mal dans la cité ;
Dieu fit l'Océan solitaire
Pour l'amour et la liberté.
Fuyons la ville, et, comme un voile,
Mettons entre elle et nous ma voile.
Pour chanter, ma guitare est là.
    Tragala !

En mer ! en mer ! mon andalouse !
La mer sourit aux matelots.
La plus belle sur la pelouse,
Sois la plus belle sur les flots.
Rien qu'à te voir, Dieu me pardonne,
On te prendrait pour la Madone.
Pour prier, mon rosaire est là.
    Tragala !

En mer ! en mer ! ô ma maîtresse !
Que l'onde couvre de sa voix
Le cri des peuples en détresse
Qu'égorge le couteau des rois !
Mais qu'un jour nous amène l'heure
De venger l'opprimé qui pleure...
Pour frapper, mon poignard est là.
    Tragala !

A. Grisar sets stanza 2

    Is not the sea
    Made for free,
Land for courts and chains alone?
        TH. MOORE
