Ein Mädchen sitzt an Quellesrand,
verwelkte Rosen in zarter Hand,
sieht träumend die weißen Wolken zieh'n,
sieht spielend die lichten Wellen flieh'n,
singt leise, leise, leise
gar süße trübe Weise.

Die Nachtigall im Rosenstrauch
hört kaum das Lied, so singt sie's auch,
die Quelle lauschet dem süßen Klang
und rauschet ihn flüsternd das Tal entlang;
sie singen leise, leise
die süße, trübe Weise.

Und wie's der Rosenstrauch erlauscht,
mit leisem Flüstern er schwankt und rauscht,
ein Regen von Rosenblättern sinkt
auf die Maid und die Quelle, die helle, blinkt,
und rings klingt leise, leise
die süße, trübe Weise.
