Wie ragt das Schloß in Gewölk und Sturm!

Wie ragt das Schloß in Gewölk und Sturm!
Die Leuchte zittert im Bubenthurm,
Das Burgthor knarrt mit Riegel und Kette,
Die Zofe wacht an der Kaiserin Bette.
O Staufen, Staufen,
Einsam in tiefer Nacht.

"Was habt Ihr gesprochen, gnäd'ge Frau?"
"Schau, Mädchen, nach den Wänden schau!
Dort seh' ich Konrad, meinen Gatten,
Vorüberzieh'n gekrönte Schatten."
O Staufen, Staufen,
Einsam in tiefer Nacht.

"Da ziehen sie, so Herr als Knecht,
Durch die Thüre dort, ein Heldengeschlecht.
Die Herzoge sind's, die Kaiser alle:
Sie wandern aus der Väter Halle."
O Staufen, Staufen,
Einsam in tiefer Nacht.

Und Morgens, sobald die Sonne schien,
Fiel Dein Haupt, edler Konradin!
Deine Mutter hatt' es eh' erfahren,
So kam' sie früh' zu grauen Haaren.
O Staufen, Staufen,
Wohin ist Deine Pracht?
