Fantastique ce soir, la lune 
Semble dire du haut des cieux 
A ces tourmentés anxieux 
Ne sortant plus qu’à l’heure brune : 

« Je luis pour les arbres si doux 
Qui ai spectralement surgissent, 
Pour les eaux qui me réfléchissent... 
Mais surtout je brille pour vous. 

    Mes rayons froids, magiques baumes, 
Pénétreront vos cœurs jusqu'à ce vieux témoin,
    La conscience — dans son coin. 

    Et personne ne vous verra. 
Votre âme solitaire en pleurs s'épanchera : 
Cette nuit, je serai le sommeil des fantômes. »
