Le moineau que j'aimais, qui venait à ma voix 
Pépier sur mon cou, voltiger su mes doigts 
Et cacher dans mon sein sa tête inassouvie !
 
Il est mort, l'oiselet que ma bouche ravie 
De caressants baisers a couvert tant de fois !
Il est mort de douleur, comme un enfant des bois,
En voyant que Catulle oubliait sa Lesbie.

Le Destin, -- ce cruel et sombre moissonneur, -- 
A fauché, d'un seul coup, mes rêves de bonheur 
Et leur témoin discret : mème sort les rassemble !

Sous le soleil d'avril éclos le même jour, 
Vous deviez succomber fatalement ensemble, 
Pauvre et cher passereau, pauvre et fragile amour !
