Wohin, wohin auf nächtlich dunklen Bahnen?
Es saust der Wind, die alten Eichen dröhnen!
Hörst du das Lied des Meeres ferne tönen,
dich an die Kraft des Elements zu mahnen?
Wohin bei Sturmesweh'n und Wellenschlägen?
Fühlst du's im Schoß der Erde sich nicht regen,
drohend gegen dich bewegen?

Ich ziehe hin, der Sturm durchweht die Saiten
der Lyra mir, sie hallet Friedenslaute.
Sieh, schon verklärt der Mond sich, der vertraute,
in leisem Duft, und aus den Wipfeln gleiten
und aus dem Meere steigen Engelslieder,
denn Liebe klingt die Erd', der Himmel wieder.
