Tief unten im heiligen Gotthard
Language: German (Deutsch)
Tief unten im heiligen Gotthard,
da sitzen die Väter gereiht,
da sitzen die herrlichen Helden,
zu richten unsere Zeit.
Da sitzen an steinerner Tafel,
da sitzen im heiligen Saal,
auf [ihre]1 Schwerter gestützet,
die alten Boten zumal.

Und oben an steinerner Tafel
im alten heiligen Saal,
da sitzet der Gundoldingen,
gestützt an den steinernen Pfahl;
da sitzet der Gundoldingen,
der rufet die Boten heran,
dass sie den Vätern verkünden,
was ihre Söhne getan.

Und zu dem steinernen Pfahle,
da treten die Boten heran
und künden [den]2 Helden die Märe,
was ihre [Söhne]3 getan.
Und um die steinerne Tafel,
da sitzen die Väter gereiht,
auf ihre Schwerter gestützet,
zu richten unsere Zeit.

Confirmed with Gedichte von Caspar Schiesser, 2. Bändchen, Zürich, 1838.

Note: this text is an excerpt from the proœmium to a long, unfinished poem titled "Das Gericht" dealing with the old heroes of Switzerland, most of whom have become well-known due to Schiller's "Wilhelm Tell". Gundoldingen refers to the leader of the Luzern troops in the battle of Sempach, in which the Swiss confederation won a decisive victory over the Austrians. Gundoldingen died in this battle.
