Gambettas rosor

På Gambettas kista, man sagt,
det fanns bland lager och calla
en enkel krans, en krans af rosor allenast.
Hur kom den dit, och hvem skänkte den?
Det visste man icke, vet ej än,
men folket gissade genast.

Det hviskade, att till Palais Bourbon,
när klockorna sjöngo sin midnattssång
kring aveny och gator, kom frihetens ängel
och bragte en krans af glödande rosor
ifrån Provence till Frankrikes förre diktator.

De plockats därnere vid solig kust
och svälde ännu af lefnadslust
och doftade liksom om våren,
ty allt hvad friheten vidrört en gång,
det må vara en blomma eller en sång,
det vet ej af död ens vid båren.
