Rödaste guld i var furas krona, 
blåaste silver på kvällblankt sund. 
Enigt i doftande skogen tona 
syrsor och trastar i fritt förbund. 
Nu är den sorglösa vakans stund.

"Aldrig en blund får i natt jag sova!" 
klagar i snåret en flickas röst: 
"Aldrig jag tror, vad han än må lova!" 
Stilla en annan ger hopp och tröst: 
"Vänta mitt barn, det är långt till höst."

"Vänta, ja, vänta! I kväll har han svurit, 
komma och vara mig trogen och huld. 
Havet jag giver hans ring, som jag burit, 
kommer snart efter, det är hans skuld." 
Furorna susa med kronor av guld.
