Wie wird die Nacht so lüstern! Wie blüht so reich der Wald! In allen Wipfeln flüstern Viel Stimmen mannigfalt. Die Bächlein blinken und rauschen, Die Blumen duften und glühn, Die Marmorbilder lauschen Hervor aus dunklem Grün. Die Nachtigall ruft: Zurück! zurück! Der Knab' schickt nur voraus den Blick; Sein Herz ist wild, sein Sinn getrübt, Vergessen alles, was er liebt. Er kommt zum Schloß im Garten, Die Fenster sind voll Glanz, Am Tor die Pagen warten, Und droben klingt der Tanz. Er schreitet hinauf die Treppen, Er tritt hinein in den Saal, Da rauschen die Sammetschleppen, Da blinkt der Goldpokal. Die Nachtigall ruft: Zurück! zurück! Der Knab' schickt nur voraus den Blick; Sein Herz ist wild, sein Sinn getrübt, Vergessen alles, was er liebt. Die schönste von den Frauen Reicht ihm den Becher hin, Ihm rinnt ein süßes Grauen Seltsam durch Herz und Sinn. Er leert ihn bis zum Grunde, Da spricht am Tor der Zwerg: »Der unsre bist zur Stunde, Dies ist der Venusberg.« Die Nachtigall ruft nur noch von fern, Den Knaben treibt sein böser Stern; Sein Herz ist wild, sein Sinn getrübt, Vergessen alles, was er liebt. Und endlich fort vom Reigen Führt ihn das schöne Weib; Ihr Auge blickt so eigen, Verlockend glüht ihr Leib. Fern von des Fests Gewimmel, Da blühen die Lauben so dicht - In Wolken birgt am Himmel Der Mond sein Angesicht. Der Nachtigall Ruf ist lang verhallt, Den Knaben treibt der Lust Gewalt; Sein Herz ist wild, sein Sinn getrübt, Vergessen alles, was er liebt. - - Und als es wieder taget, Da liegt er ganz allein; Im Walde um ihn raget Verwildertes Gestein. Kühl geht die Luft von Norden Und streut das Laub umher; Er selbst ist grau geworden, Und bang sein Herz und leer. Er sitzt und starret vor sich hin Und schüttelt das Haupt in irrem Sinn. Die Nachtigall ruft: Zu spät! zu spät! Der Wind die Stimme von dannen weht.
