by Joseph Samuel Tauber (1822 - 1879)

Rom im Jahre 1845
Language: German (Deutsch)
Und doch so groß noch als Ruine!
Ein Krater, ausgeglüht,
ein Fürst mit edler Trauermiene,
der vor dem Blocke kniet.

Auf, auf, mein Rom! Hinweg die Kutten,
[hinweg]1 die Heiligkeit!
Zerbrich die Fesseln, brich die Ruten,
auf! Sei bereit zur Zeit!

Du träumst im Joche, schläfst in Ketten;
zerreiß' das Eisenband!
Nur Römer können Rom noch retten,
kein [Volk sonst]2, sonst kein Land.

[Auf, auf]3! Entfalte deine Flügel!
Roms Aare flogen hoch.
Noch hast du deine sieben Hügel,
sei Rom, zerbrich dein Joch!
