by Benjamin Louis Paul Godard (1849 - 1895)
Translation by Hermann Wolff (1845 - 1902)

Deine Augen
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the French (Français)
Sage mir, holde Zauberin,
wer gab dir solch ein Augenpaar,
Augen, so voll zartem Sinn
und wie die Himmelssterne klar?
Wer ist die holde Fee gewesen,
die dir aus ihrem Zauberschein,
du schönste Blume, auserlesen
den Schmuck von reinstem Edelstein?

Sage mir, holde Zauberin,
wer gab dir solch ein Augenpaar,
Augen, so voll zartem Sinn
und wie die Himmelssterne klar?
Giebt's andre Welten, die besitzen
solch eine Zier, so überreich,
sieht auf dem Meeresgrund man blitzen
solch Herrlichleit, der deinen gleich?

Sage mir, holde Zauberin,
wer gab dir solch ein Augenpaar,
Augen, so voll zartem Sinn
und wie die Himmelssterne klar?
Ob es Sterne, ob's Feengold,
sei's Meeres Schatz, was geht's mich an,
was sie seien, du süße, Holde,
wenn ich sie küssen, küssen kann!
