Il était une fois un roi qui, d’une lyre
Faisait couler, bondir et voltiger des sons...
C’est à peine s’il connaissait quelques chansons,
Il était doux, naïf, et ne savait pas lire.
 
Et sous ses doigts vibraient d’harmonieux accords,
Et le rythme toujours était plaintif ou tendre,
Et le soir, il allait dans ses bois pour entendre
Sangloter au lointain l’appel cuivreux des cors...
 
Il ne s’occupait pas du tout de son royaume ;
On le voyait errer, silencieux fantôme,
Sa lyre entre les mains... avec des yeux de fou !
 
Un jour on le trouva — sans le chercher du reste —
Étendu mort sur l’herbe, avec encor le geste
Qu’il avait, d’effleurer les cordes...
                                                               Voilà tout.
