       En komt de mei, wat zal de mei dan brengen?
       - Veel goud en blauw om lente-azuur te mengen,
Veel bladergroen, waar 't blije bosch mee vlagt.
 
Zal heete zon geen teedre knoppen zengen?
       Zal rijp vernielen blanke bloesempracht? -
       'k Heb heel den winter naar den mei gesmacht
En komt de mei, wat zal de mei dan brengen?
 
Ik wacht de zon, na grijze wolkenjacht,
       Wen rust de lucht van storm en regenplengen.
       Ik tel der dagen lentelichtend lengen.
Ik wacht en wacht - en weet niet wát ik wacht...
