Aarzlend betreed ik , vromer nog en blooder
Dan ' t blootvoets kindje een kathedraal vol psalmen ,
Uw hooge zaal, vol zacht geruisch van palmen ,
O reine Geest! o heil'ge Passiedooder!

Traag schrijdend draag ik , in den krachtig -kalmen
Adem van d'avond, ' t hart dat vlamde al rooder
En rooder in mijn borst : die menschvergoder
Wil langer niet bij schijn en schepsel talmen.

Neem uit mijn handen, eer ' t mij gansch verbrande,
O Gij die ' k voel mijn groot verlangen zegenen!
Dit arm krank hart als vlammende offerande.

Laat op mijn aanschijn Uw genade regenen,
Dat zonder zonde ik leve en veilig lande
-- Zoo weze Uw wil! – in ' t Rijk der Aarde ontstegenen!
