by Walt Whitman (1819 - 1892)
On the beach at night, alone
Language: English
after the whistling winds
Below a myriad waves, hastening,
undulating waves,
waves of the ocean
On the beach at night , alone,
as the old mother sways her to and fro
singing her husky song,
as I watch the bright stars shining
Waves of the ocean,
bubbling and gurgling, blithely prying,
Waves, laughing and buoyant
O soul
thoughts, silent thoughts,
of Time and Space and Death,
like waters flowing,
Bear me indeed as through
regions infinite
Note: fragments from several different poems in Leaves of Grass.
