Das schöne Mädchen war nicht sein!

[Er zog dahin]1 von Land zu Land;
wo er ein schönes Schlösschen fand,
da lachte er,

Wär' doch das schöne Schlösschen mein,
wie wollt' ich drinne glücklich sein.

Das schöne Schlösschen war nicht sein!

Er [trabte]2 munter lustig fort

Wie könnte ich wohl glücklich sein,

Confirmed with Christian August Vulpius, Theodor, König der Korsen, Rudolstadt: Langbein und Klüger, 1801, pages 79 - 81. Appears in erster Theil, siebentes Buch. The poem is embedded in a novel, so it may have been written by C. Vulpius or it may have been an unattributed quotation of a popular poem of the time.
