So lang noch liegt auf seinem Grund
Der Hort der Nibelungen,
Werd' unter uns in schönem Bund
Von ihrem Ruhm gesungen!
So lang sein Wein noch mag wie Gold
In unserm Becher blinken,
Soll Kunst und Wissen traut und hold,
Der goldne Schatz, uns winken!
So lang er strömt hinab zum Meer,
Und fern bespühlt die Dünen,
Soll reifen ihre Saat umher,
Und neu stets wieder grünen! --
Stoßt an, stoßt an mit hellem Klang,
Der Sohn, als wie der Vater,
Und weithin schall's den Strom entlang
Zum Gruß dir, alma mater!

There we sit at the green Rhine,
Once more so happily together!
Like its waters in the evening glow,
So blaze the eyes of us all!
For from yonder our mother's house [the university]
Waves a familiar greeting to her sons,
Then to the roaring of the river
A joyful song might well ring out!
As long as the Nibelungs’ hoard still lies
Upon the river’s bottom
May among us, in a beautiful bond,
[The university’s] glory be sung!
As long as [the Rhine's] wine may still shine
Like gold in our goblets
May the golden treasure of art and knowledge
Beckon to us, familiar and lovely!
As long as [the Rhine] shall surge down to the sea,
And lap about the distant dunes,
[The university’s] sown crops all around shall ripen
And burgeon green ever anew! --
Clink goblets, clink with a bright sound,
The son like the father,
And far along the river let it resound
As a greeting to you, alma mater!
