by Arne Garborg (1851 - 1924)

Det kveldar um Haust yver laage Land
Language: Norwegian (Nynorsk)
Det kveldar um Haust yver laage Land.
Eit Havbrak vaknar ved Nordan-Strand.

Blaakalde Skyer kviler i Vest.
Dagens Auga sloknar og brest.

Myrane søv under Taake-Feld.
Aasus varslar i stille Kveld.

Trolldom lurer i Jordslags Eim; -
Veslemøy hastar med Smalen heim.

Men nede paa Bøen, ved Elvestrand
saag ho ein underleg gamall Mann.

Knebrok had' han og Kufte sid;
høyrde kje heime i denne Tid.

Daa fekk ho so hjarteleg vond ein Kvekk;
ho kunde kje koma av tverran Flekk.

Men Mannen tusla paa Elvebard
der attum den eldgamle Skiftesgard.

Tusla og stræva forutan Ro;
sleit og lyfte, men Garden stod.

Lyfte og sleit utan Ro og Rast;
men Steinane laag som i Muren fast.

Daa skreik han og grét av Barmen trong,
Skreik og grét, til det vart som Song.
