Wen dadenloos, met loom gevouwen handen,
Ik 't wijdingsuur van peinzende' Avond wacht,
Waar zeilt de maan in zilvren wolkenjacht
Of, blank in blauw, de heil'ge sterren branden,
Dan voel ik diep hoe ik den Dag veracht,
Dien grijzen dwerg, die bindt mijn ziel met banden
Fel schrijnend wen 'k mij lósrijt - doch de wanden
Gaan wijken, Avond slaakt mijn banden zacht.

O troostrijke Avond! kom mijn ziel bevrijden!
Gelijk haar lief verlangend wacht de vrouw,
Doch, wil zijn luim haar schreien doen - en mijden,
Verzuimde plicht doorvlijmt haar borst met rouw,
Zoo blijf ik u, in vreeze en hoop, verbeiden. -
O lavende Avond! blijf mijn ziel getrouw.
