Mich oftmals läßt verzagen,
Daß sie den Kummer wie die Lust
Vergißt in wenig Tagen.

Und ist der Schmerz, um den es weint,
Dem Herzen noch so heilig -
Der Vogel singt, die Sonne scheint,
Vergessen ist er eilig.

Und war die Freude noch so süß -
Ein Wölkchen kommt gezogen,
Und vom geträumten Paradies
Ist jede Spur verflogen.

Und fühl' ich das, so weiß ich kaum,
Was weckt mir tiefern Schauer,
Daß gar so kurz der Freude Traum,
Oder so kurz die Trauer?
