Til Natten
Language: Norwegian (Bokmål)
Vel prises din glade søster
med solblomsten på sin hat, —
jeg elsker kun dig, du stille,
du blege, tungsindige nat.

Du er som en fager kvinde,
der, af sin elsker forladt,
i sørgesløret sig hyller,
du mørke, deilige nat!

Jeg ser i dit stjerneøie,
der blinker fra himlens borg,
og finder igen min egen,
min dybe, deilige sorg.

Jeg lægger mig ind til dit hjerte
og hører det stille slå,
og mindes de evigheder,
som fra dig og til dig gå.

Din taushed er som et kærtegn,
der stryger min blege kind.
Du køler med dugg min pande
og sænker drøm i mit sind.

Du synger for mig en vise
med vemodsbævende klang…
Slig kan ikke dagen synge,
skønt dagen er rig og lang.

Den vise er sælsomt blandet
af midnattens kval og lyst,
med suk fra de lidendes leie,
med hvisken ved brudens bryst.

Dig døden hvisker i øret
mangt ord, mens den går forbi…
Du nikker blidt, og du lytter
til sfærernes harmoni.

Men al din hellige taushed
og stjernernes fjerne bud
bringer mit hjerte at skælve
som talte det tyst med gud.
