Auge und Thränen

Verlöschen soll vom vielen Weinen 
Ein Auge, sei es noch so klar;
Doch lichter dringt der Stral des deinen 
Durch all die Thränen immerdar.

Es wohnt ja nicht im Aug' die Wonne,
Es wohnt ia nicht im Aug' der Schmerz:
Was aus ihm bricht wie eine Sonne,
Ist in der Brust das Menschenherz.

Je reicher drum das innre Scheinen, 
Je heller stralt das Auge gleich --
Kann da ein Aug' vergehn vom Weinen? 
Wird nicht das Herz von Thränen reich? 

Kein Wunder, daß dein Auge glühte 
Nach all dem Weh so hell und rein;
Denn all der Reichthum im Gemüte 
Gedeiht in heil'gem Schmerz allein.
