Im Staube zog ich Die Straße entlang, Die Füße matt, Und das Herze krank. Da trollte an mir Ein Bursch vorbei, Der schwang seinen Hut So frank und frei: "Grüß Gott!" Nun horchte ich auf, Wie das Bächlein sprang, Was die Linde rauscht' Und das Vöglein sang, Was der säuselnde Wind Trug gen Himmel empor -- Es war ein Jubel Im vollen Chor: "Grüß Gott!" Da spürt' ich erst recht Die Sonne im Feld, Den wonnigen Mai In der blühenden Welt; Mein Kummer zerfloß, Ich wußte nicht wie, Und lauter stets jauchzt' ich Die Melodie: "Grüß Gott!"
