Io fui talvolta nella casa di un sommo cantatore nominato
Casella, e quivi convenivano taluni gentili uomini. Guido Cavalcanti tra gli altri, cavaliere
de migliori, che si diletta del dire parole per rima, e Ser Brunetto dottissimo rettorico
tornato di Parigi; e un giovinetto degli Alighieri nominato Dante. E questo giovinetto mi
divenne caro, tanto era pieno di pensieri d'amore e di dolore, tanto era ardente in ascoltare
il canto. E alcuna volta ebbe da lui un bene inatteso il mio cuore che sempre chiuso era;
perché la troppa soavità del canto alcuna volta lo sforzava a piangere silenziosamente, e,
vedendolo anch'io con lui piangeva.
