Am Himmel Abendsonnengluth, Und Spicherns Höhe trieft von Blut, Der Himmel roth, der Berg so roth, Und tausend Helden starr und todt. Nur der dort an der Mauer lehnt, Der stirbt nicht, weil sein Herz sich sehnt, Sein junges Herz, das steht nicht still, Weil ein Wort es noch sagen will. Gottlob, du treuer Kamerad, Dich führte Gott den rechten Pfad. Kann ich dir helfen, Bruder, sprich, Wie lab' ich dich, wie rett' ich dich? Er kniet zu ihm, das Haupt geneigt. Und auf die trockne Lippe zeigt Der Todeswunde, und ihn letzt Der Tropfen, der die Lippe netzt. Du tapfres Herz, das alle Kraft Für's letzte Wort zusammenrafft! "O schreibe!" -- Sieh, ich bin bereit. Und er dictirt sein letztes Leid. Aus wunder Brust haucht's tief und hohl: "Du liebe Mutter, lebe wohl!" Das war sein Brief und letzter Will'. Das junge Herz, nun stand es still.
