Wohl geht der Jugend Sehnen
Nach manchem schönen Traum;
Mit Ungestüm und Thränen
Stürmt sie den Sternenraum.
Der Himmel hört ihr Flehen
Und lächelt gnädig: nein!
Und läßt vorübergehen
Den Wunsch Zusammt der Pein.

Wenn aber nun vom Scheine
Das Herz sich abgekehrt,
Und nur das Echte, Reine,
Das Menschliche begehrt,
Und doch mit allem Streben
Kein Ziel erreichen kann:
Da muß man wohl vergeben
Die Trauer auch dem Mann.
