Den gamle

Ur de djupaste djupen jag kämpat mig hit, 
se, jag kom från de eländas ort, 
och vad undrar du då att min hjässa är vit 
när en sådan vandring jag gjort?

Och vad undrar du väl att den skälver min röst? 
Det var annat i visornas år. 
Jag har levat ändå, vare detta min tröst 
när att glömma jag äntligen går.

Den skall sluta att stappla, min styvnade fot, 
och mitt hjärta ska sluta att slå. - 
På min grav skola vildmarkens blommor slå rot 
medan dagarna komma och gå.
