Wär' ich der Morgen, wie er sich bebend
wie er errötend zu dir sich stiehlt,
still dann vom Aug' den Schlummer dir hebend
schaut' ich hinein und fände mein Bild.

Wär' ich der Mittag, gösse ich Strahlen
ewiger Glut dir ins Herz hinein,
tief in den Grund, da sollten sie malen
hell dir das Wort: Gedenke mein!

Wär' ich der Abend, sollt' Philomele
legen ins Ohr dir den schmeichelnden Sang,
dass sie mit süßem Laut dir erzähle:
Liebe ihn fort dein Leben lang.

Wär' ich die Nacht, ich wollte dich küssen
leise in selige Träume hinein,
selig dir lauschend würd' ich's dann wissen:
Wachend und träumend denkst du mein.
