Ein wüst Geröll! Einsames Todesfeld,
So hart und starr und wild!
O gottverlass'ne, wüste, kleine Welt,
Du grauenvolles Bild!
Lodernd des Abends Purpurflammen loh'n,
Verklärend das Gestein;
Die Felsenblöcke starr'n mich an und droh'n,
Die Steine schreien.

Wie rührt mein Herz dies grauenhafte Bild 
Der ausgestorb'nen Welt! 
Vor ödem Gram die bange Brust mir schwillt, 
Die stumme Klage gellt. 
Es irrt mein Geist durch starrendes Gestein, 
Und irrt und rankt und sucht -- 
Vom Himmel dröhnt ein unerbittlich Nein! -- 
Die Stätte ist verflucht. -- -- --
