Lebensdrang

Da ich noch glücklich war, zog oft ein Klang
Von Todessehnsucht durch mein lächelnd Leben,
Wie Abendwinde übern Maienhang;
Es lockte mich, die Flügel aufzuheben,
Um von der Erde lauter Fröhlichkeit
Ins stille Reich des Friedens zu entschweben.

Nun, da ich wehevoll in Noth und Leid
Mich selbst, ein glühend Ichgefühl, geboren,
Nun will ich leben! Geize mit der Zeit,
Und jeder Augenblick scheint mir verloren,
In dem ich nicht gestrebt, gewirkt, geschafft,
Gepilgert zu des Lebens goldnen Thoren!
