Frühlingstraum

Ich träumte von bunten Blumen,
So wie sie wohl blühen im Mai,
Ich träumte von grünen Wiesen,
Von lustigem Vogelgeschrei.

Und als die Hähne krähten,
Da ward mein Auge wach;
Da war es kalt und finster,
Es schrieen die Raben vom Dach.

Doch an den Fensterscheiben,
Wer mahlte die Blätter da?
Ihr lacht wohl über den Träumer,
Der Blumen im Winter sah?

Ich träumte von Lieb' um Liebe,
Von einer schönen Maid,
Von Herzen und von Küssen,
Von [Wonn']1 und Seligkeit.

Und als die Hähne krähten,
Da ward mein Herze wach;
Nun sitz' ich hier alleine
Und denke dem Traume nach.

Die Augen schließ' ich wieder,
Noch schlägt das Herz so warm.
Wann grünt ihr Blätter am Fenster?
Wann halt' ich [dich, Liebchen,]2 im Arm?

Spring dream
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I dreamed of such colorful flowers
that bloom, as they do, in May.
I dreamed of fresh, green meadows,
and birds that sing on their way.

But then I heard roosters crowing,
which opened my eyes, it seemed.
So cold and dark, I listened
as ravens on rooftops screamed.

Yet there, upon my window,
who painted those beautiful leaves?
Why laugh you at the dreamer
who flowers in winter sees?

I dreamed of love and loving,
a beautiful maiden's kiss,
And heartfelt caresses, and tenderness,
of wonder and of bliss.

And then those roosters woke me,
a-crowing with loudness extreme.
So now I sit here alone,
and think back over my dream.

I close my eyes, my heart beats,
succumbing to sleep and its charms.
When will there be leaves on my window?
When shall I hold you in my arms?
