Verbirg nicht die Träne auf bleicher Wang',
du Bruder der trauernden Tanne!
O schäme dich nicht deines Herzens Drang,
die Trauer geziemt auch dem Manne,
denn Todesdunkel umgibet
den König, den alle geliebet.

Wie ähnlich war er dem Lamm im Tal,
wenn in Frieden er weilt im Gemache,
doch sah ihn der Feind in der Rüstung Stahl,
so bannt ihn der Zorn seiner Rache.
Schlaf ruhig, du Starker, du Milder,
Taube und mächtiger Wilder.

Ein Andrer geht wieder zur kämpfenden Schar,
vergisst mit der Zeit seinen Kummer,
doch Eywinds Herz bleibt der Freude bar,
denn Hakon schläft ewigen Schlummer.
Ach, Fels und Rasen bedecken
so tief den herrlichen Recken!
