Herbstlied

Ein rothes Blatt fällt hin zu meinen Füßen, 
Es war das letzte an dem kahlen Baum  --  
Es fällt so langsam, wie mit leisem Grüßen, 
Eh' ganz verweht sein kurzer Sommertraum. 

Nun liegt es da, auf dürrem Herbstesraume, 
Begraben bald von langer Winternacht 
Vergessen schläft, was einst am Lenzesbaume 
War Schmuck und Zier, erblüht in frischer Pracht,

Es gleich das Menschenherz dem kleinen Blatte, 
Es wird gar bald des Lebenssturmes Raub  --  
Und was geliebt, erfreut manch Herz einst hatte, 
Das schläft vergessen unter welkem Laub.
