Note (provided by Melanie Trumbull): this poem first appeared in the guestbook of a stately home in which Geibel was a long-term guest. When he left the premises for good, he put his farewell in the guestbook in the form of a two-stanza poem. His handwriting was clearly recognizable to those colleagues doing research about him after he died, such as editor Julius Rodenberg.
