by Hafis (c1327 - 1390)
Translation by Emanuel von Geibel (1815 - 1884)

Längst genug im weiten Raume
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Persian (Farsi)
Längst genug im weiten Raume
Schweift' ich um mit dürrem Gaume,
Rastlos nach dem Glücke sucht' ich,
Doch ergriff ich's nicht am Saume.
Darum halt' ich ruhig lächelnd
Meine Sehnsucht jetzt im Zaume,
Und gelagert, wo der Eppich
Rankt empor am Rosenbaume,
Sing' ich holder Torheit Weise
Bei des Weines Perlenschaume:
Sucht und forscht nicht, ihr entkleidet
Nur die Frucht vom duft'gen Flaume;
Unerbeten von den Göttern
Kommt das Höchste wie im Traume.
