Das Mädchen: Im Sommer ist gut lustig sein Auf hohen wilden Heiden, Dort findet man grün Plätzelein, Mein herzverliebtes Schätzelein, Von dir mag ich nit scheiden. Der Gefangene: Und sperrt man mich ein Im finstern Kerker, Dies alles sind nur Vergebliche Werke; Denn meine Gedanken Zerreißen die Schranken Und Mauern entzwei, Die Gedanken sind frei. Das Mädchen: Im Sommer ist gut lustig sein Auf hohen wilden Bergen; Man ist da ewig ganz allein, Man hört da gar kein Kindergeschrei, Die Luft mag einem da werden. El preso: El pensamiento es libre, ¿quién podría adivinarlos? Pasan rápido cual sombras nocturnas. No hay hombre capaz de conocerlos, no hay cazador capaz de dispararles; porque esto es así: el pensamiento es libre. La doncella: En verano es bueno estar alegre en prados altos y salvajes, donde una encuentra un pequeño lugar verde; el adorado tesoro de mi amor, ¡No quiero dejarte! El preso: Y si me encierran en un oscuro calabozo, es totalmente en vano que lo intenten, pues mis pensamientos atraviesan barreras y rompen en dos las paredes: ¡el pensamiento es libre! La doncella: En verano es bueno estar alegre en montañas altas y salvajes; allí siempre estás sola; no se oye chillar a los niños, y el aire es tan incitante. El preso: Es posible que así sea; y si es lo correcto, Todo cuanto suceda que en silencio sea; mi voluntad y deseo, nadie puede dominar; porque esto es así: el pensamiento es libre. La doncella: Mi amor, aquí cantas tan alegre, cual pájaro en la hierba; y yo aquí tan triste junto a la puerta del calabozo. ¡ Ojalá estuviese muerta, ojalá estuviese contigo! ¡Ay! ¿Por qué siempre he de llorar? El preso: Y como lloras tanto, Renunciaré al amor, y si me atrevo, entonces nada me atormentará. Y así en mi corazón Siempre podré reír y bromear, porque esto es así: el pensamiento es libre.
