Ein Schäfer saß im Grünen, Sein Liebchen süß im Arm; Durch [Buchenwipfel]1 schienen Der Sonne Strahlen warm. [Er kos'te]2 froh und heiter Von Liebeständeley. Da ritt bewehrt ein Reiter [Den]3 Glücklichen vorbey. »Sitz' ab, und suche Kühle!« Rief ihm der Schäfer zu. »Des Mittags nahe Schwüle Gebiethet stille Ruh'. Noch lacht im Morgenglanze So Strauch als Blume hier, Und Liebchen pflückt zum Kranze Die [frischen]4 Blüthen dir.« Da sprach der finstre Reiter: »Nie [hielt]5 mich Wald und Flur. Mich treibt mein Schicksal weiter, Und ach, mein ernster Schwur! Ich gab mein [frisches]6 Leben Dahin um schnöden Sold; Glück kann ich nicht erstreben, Nur höchstens Ruhm und Gold. Een herder zat in 't lover, Zijn liefje in zijn arm, Door beuken viel getover Van zonnestralen warm. Hij kuste blij, die snuiter, En lustig zoende zij. Bewapend reed een ruiter 't Gelukkig stel voorbij. "Zit neer en zoek wat koelte", Riep hem de herder toe, "Straks komt middagzwoelte; Die maakt je loom en moe. Nu lacht in 't ochtendstralen Nog struik en bloem volop, Mijn lief zal bloemen halen Voor 'n kransje om je kop." Toen sprak de somb're ruiter: "Nooit bindt mij bos en beemd; Mijn lot drijft m' als een muiter, En ach, mijn dure eed. Ik gaf mijn jonge leven Voor schamele soldij, Geluk kan 'k niet nastreven; Slechts roem en goud voor mij. Daarom, mijn ros, snel draven, Voorbij waar bloemen staan; Eens als ik ben begraven, Loont rust wel mijn bestaan."
