Wie thut mir so wohl der selige Frieden! Da sitz' ich im Dunkel, ganz abgeschieden, So ganz für mich; - nur der Mondenschein Kommt leise zu mir in's Gemach herein. Brauche mich aber nicht zu geniren, Nicht zu spielen, zu conversiren, Oder mich sonst attent zu zeigen. Het is zo stil, zo prettig om mij. De zon is onder, de dag voorbij. Hoe breidt zich nu snel de schemer uit! Mij is het goed, 't is meest mij te luid. Maar nu is het rustig, er hamert geen smid, Geen fitter, het volk ging weg, moe is dit. En zelfs niet een ratelend karrenwiel, Daar 'n deken van sneeuw in de straten viel. Wat doet hij mij goed, die zalige vrede! Ik zit hier in 't donker, van al afgesneden, Zo op mijzelf. Slechts de maneschijn Komt zachtjes om fijn mijn gezel te zijn, Hij kent mij al en laat mij zwijgen. Neemt enkel zijn werk op, de spindel, het goud, En spint in stilte, weeft, en lacht vertrouwd, En hangt dan zijn glanzende sluierdoek Rondom aan gerei en wand of buis. 't Is echt een rustig, gezellig bezoek, Brengt beslist ook geen onrust in huis. Wil hij blijven, 't is geen probleem, Wil hij anders, dan gaat hij heen. Ik zit dan weer stil in 't vensterraam, En zie daar omhoog alle sterren staan. Denk dan terug, met spijt, ach spijt, Aan een zo mooie, verdwenen tijd. Denk aan haar, aan wat zij kon schenken, Zucht eens stil, moet denken, moet denken.
