and involuntarily within me,
like a strange force, like a strange force, love
arises:
and now -- of you,
whether I'm waking or sleeping,
it is so sweet, so peaceful for me
to dream.
I caught sight of you;
your friendly gaze [and]
your good-natured, gentle speech,
promise me bliss [and]
say to me in secret
that I love not at all hopelessly.
Why, then, child,
are you afraid to say
that you, too, that you, too, are no stranger
to infatuation?
And why hide
our sacred feeling
for the sake of the spite of human
judgment?
I cannot, my friend,
endure this falsehood.
and, to me, if life
smiles,
we must take from it
the best that exists within it;
happiness twice to us rarely
appears.
